Safety Tips for Van Drivers

Insurance Revolution Blog , TM

Being a van driver means that your entire business depends on your van. If there’s an issue with your van, i.e. you’re involved in a car accident, it can have a detrimental effect on your business and your life as a whole. As a van driver it’s essential that you have eyes at the back of your head and heed safety advice from experts.

Here at Insurance Revolution, we’ve been dealing with van drivers for years, so we’re pretty clued up on health & safety when it comes to van driving. We’ve put together a list of handy tips to help keep you and your van safe on the roads.

Get a good night’s sleep before a long drive

You’ve probably heard this a thousand times before, but getting a good night’s sleep before a long drive is essential if you want to remain alert. If you get tired on the motorway, no matter how eager you are to get home, pull into a service station and grab a strong coffee. Then take a short nap while you’re waiting for the caffeine to kick in - it could save your life!

Check your tyres, lights, oil and water

This is especially important prior to long journeys, but make sure you check your tyres, lights, oil and water before you set off.

TOP TIP: Don’t forget to check your windscreen washer level - in bad weather you can actually get a penalty for having an empty washer bottle.

Make sure your cargo doors are secure

You’ve checked your lights, oil, water and fuel… but have you checked your cargo doors? It has been known for open cargo doors to be fatal to pedestrians, so make sure you double check they’re locked before you set off. A court appearance could have a terrible effect on your business, as well as your conscience!
